SUB-JUNIORS AND JUNIORS DO DELHI PROUD IN NATIONAL SQUASH 2009

The performance of our Sub Junior and Juniors at the recently concluded Nationals at Daly College, Indore was nothing short of spectacular. They did us proud in each and every age category displaying the depth of upcoming talent in the city. The older players were joined by new and upcoming aspirants to draw a very promising picture for our sport in the city.

Let us start with some statistics:

1 NATIONAL CHAMPION, 1 RUNNER-UP, 1 SEMI-FINALIST, 5 5TH POSITIONS,1 6TH POSITION, 2 7TH POSITIONS(8 QUARTER FINALISTS IN ALL) and look who is right behind-12 PRE-QUARTER-FINALISTS and 6 3RD Round performances this year at Nationals at the Daly College, Indore. And to top it all, the Most Promising Girl Player award of the Nationals, second year in a row.

Delhi has never had it so good and the statistics show the depth of talent and competition growing in the City by the day. Of the 41 children from Delhi participating in the Nationals, 23 made it to the Pre-quarter stage and above. The No. of 5th/6th positions and close Pre-quarter matches showed how many them just missed it by a whisker.

The Delhi Teams in The Girls and Boys reflected the same trend. A summary of this performance will be shortly uploaded.

HARSHIT KAUR- The new National Champion Girls Under-13 in an all Delhi Final at the Daly College Indore. She also bagged the Most Promising Girl Player award for the Nationals this year.

ADYA ADVANI- Runner-up in the Girls Under-13 losing 3-1 to Harshit Kaur in the finals.

PANKHURI MALHOTRA- 3RD position in Girls Under-15. Unfortunate not to make the finals, going down fighting 3-2 to R. Lakshya of TN after leading 2-0 in the semi-finals.

SACHIKA INGALE- 5TH position in Girls Under-17 beating Shria Khatri of Maharashtra for the 5/6 position.

YASH BHARGAVA- 5TH position in Boys Under-11. Unfortunate to go down fighting to Runner Up R. Cheraiyaselvan of TN 3-2 in the Quarters.

JUNAID – 5TH positon in Boys Under-13. His 5 Setter with top seed Sandeep Ramachandran in the quarters was the highlight of the tournament.

DIYA KUMAR- 7TH position in Girls Under-17 beating Shruti Dugar of TN for the 7/8 position.

A special mention is well deserved by our dozen who were right behind and some who simply succumbed to the luck of the draw.

SANIKA- 9-16TH position in Girls Under-11. A newcomer to the circuit, has already started showing promise.

JANET VIDHI- 9-16TH position IN Girls Under-15, went down to Varsha Pndey in the pre-quarters.

VISHRUTYI SAHNI- 9-16TH position in Girls Under-17, constantly improving but unfortunate to meet top seed Anaka Alankamony on TN in the pre-quarters.

ARUSHI AGARWAL-9-16TH position. A regular player who plays all Delhi tournaments religiously. Constantly improving.

ROBIN MANN- 9-16TH position in Boys Under-13. Unfortunate to meet team mate Junaid in the pre-quarters, went down fighting in a thrilling 5 setter.

ABHISHEKH KUMAR- 9-16TH position in Boys Under-15, lost to Raghav Mehrotra of Maharashtra in the pre-quarters.

Stellar performances by Delhi kids at Junior Nationals 09

It was an amazing 10 odd days of my life at Daly College, Indore. Though I have now played Squash since I was 14 years old (well, that means 1984 to be more precise) the high of being a State Team Coach at the Nationals was a first for me. Squash has been a passion since the mid-80's.....having closing followed the exploits of Jehangir & then Jansher Khan....the all time legends of the game from Pakistan. And not to forget the reading of Jonah Barrington Squash Books on the Squash Courts....reading and trying out the shots!!

I had a talented bunch of boys and girls with me...but the challenge, I thought was very much like that which SRK had in Chuk-De.....how to get the act together! In a way the Open's prior to the team event gave me time to gauge the form and performance of all our team players. I kept a close watch at their performances...wins and losses both. This helped me make informed unbiased decisions later on during the Inter-State Team events.

Working with kids always gives me a major high. But here there was a different kettle of fish to handle...over-anxious parents ever eager to push their kids that one bit more to satisfy their expectations. As a students counselor my mandate has always been to encourage parents not to over-burden their kids. But its easier said than done. Parents will be parents and kids...will be kids...ever wanting to rise to the occasion and do that one bit more to brighten up the eyes of their mom's and dad's.

We had some stellar performances....Harshit Kaur and Janet were outstanding in the team events...Girls U15...and both made invaluable contributions that helped Delhi win the Gold with a clean sweep in the round robin matches. The Girls and Boys U19 teams also did admirably well...winning Delhi the Bronze Medal in both these events. The Boys U15 performance could have been better had not some of the kids fallen sick.

In the end...it was a team effort that got us the results in the Inter State events. I would also like to thank all parents who volunteered to help out, especially on the days when I had fallen victim to the stomach bug that was striking almost everybody.

A message for all Delhi players going for Junior Nationals 09

DSA wishes the Squash fraternity a Very Happy Diwali. Also, we wish the Delhi players all the very best for the upcoming Junior Nationals 09 at Indore. A few points need to be kept in mind by all of us as we represent the State at the Nationals:

  • Play the game in true sportsman spirit. Only one player will win, but there is a victory in defeat if we learn from it.
  • I request all players to help, support and cheer one another. Parents accompanying their children are requested to encourage their wards to take this up. They themselves can take the initiative and reach out.
  • It is requested that all children carry a diary and a pen in their kit bags. The idea is to make notes while watching others play. Also, do try and help your team-mates by sharing these notes as and when possible.
  • As we all want to win, do remember to work hard, eat & sleep well and be fully prepared physically, mentally & emotionally before each match. Winning becomes a habit for those who plan for it. It does not happen by chance for very long. All this while, let not a loss get the better of you. Analyze what happened, discuss with well wishers and be better prepared for the next match as and when it happens.
  • For parents - kindly avoid over-burdening your child with your expectations. Your kids are already doing great. Lets enjoy their efforts and just encourage them to do their best. Help them in this effort to the best of your ability. Remember - kids adore you if they see you behind them, both in victory and in loss. Also, your hard work will most definitely bring rewards - tangible as well as intangible - sooner or later.
  • Do carry basic first aid items in your kit bags.
  • Attend team meetings as and when requested to.
  • Be very punctual and disciplined. Since you are ambassadors of your State do remember that every action and word from you will be observed by others.
  • Last, but not the least, have lots of fun, make friends on and off the court and return home as better and more mature human beings.
The following shall be the Delhi Team Officials:

Manager - Sri Sharad Sharma
Coach (Boys and Girls Teams) - Sri Nikhil Pant

Abbreviated Rules: Aspects needing special attention!!

Controversial incidences in recent tournaments have shown that we all need to URGENTLY get acquainted with certain Squash Rules applicable to peculiar situations.

Coaches, parents as well as players need to know these so that when during tournament matches these situations arise, one is able to implement well established WSF Squash Rules.

So here goes..............!!

HITTING AN OPPONENT WITH THE BALL (Rule 9)

If a player strikes the ball, which, before reaching the front wall, hits the opponent, or the opponent’s racket or clothing, play stops.

If the return would have been good and the ball would have struck the front wall without first touching any other wall, the striker wins the rally, provided the striker did not "turn".

If the ball either had struck, or would have struck, any other wall and the return would have been good, a let is played.

If the return would not have been good, the striker loses the rally.

TURNING (Rule 9)

If the striker has either followed the ball round, or allowed it to pass around him or her - in either case striking the ball to the right of the body after the ball had passed to the left (or vice-versa) - then the striker has "TURNED".

If the opponent is struck by the ball after the striker has turned, the rally is awarded to the opponent.

If the striker, while turning, stops play for fear of striking the opponent, then a let is played. This is the recommended course of action in situations where a player wants to turn but is unsure of the opponent’s position.

FURTHER ATTEMPTS (Rule 10)

A player, after attempting to strike the ball and missing, may make a further attempt to return the ball.

If a further attempt would have resulted in a good return, but the ball hits the opponent, a let is played.

If the return would not have been good, the striker loses the rally.

INTERFERENCE (Rule 12)

When it is his or her turn to play the ball, a player is entitled to freedom from interference by the opponent.

To avoid interference, the opponent must try to provide the player with unobstructed direct access to the ball, a fair view of the ball, space to complete a swing at the ball and freedom to play the ball directly to any part of the front wall.

A player, finding the opponent interfering with the play, can accept the interference and play on, or stop play. It is preferable to stop play if there is a possibility of colliding with the opponent, or of hitting him or her with racket or ball.

When play has stopped as a result of interference the general guidelines are:

The player is entitled to a let if he or she could have returned the ball and the opponent has made every effort to avoid the interference.

The player is not entitled to a let (i.e. loses the rally) if he or she could not have returned the ball, or accepts the interference and plays on, or the interference was so minimal that the player’s access to and strike at the ball was not affected.

The player is entitled to a stroke (i.e. wins the rally) if the opponent did not make every effort to avoid the interference, or if the player would have hit a winning return, or if the player would have struck the opponent with the ball going directly to the front wall.

LETS (Rule 13)

A let is an undecided rally. The rally does not count and the server serves again from the same box.

In addition to lets allowed as indicated in the paragraphs above, lets can be allowed in other circumstances. For example, a let may be allowed if the ball in play touches any article lying on the floor, or if the striker refrains from hitting the ball owing to a reasonable fear of injuring the opponent.

A let must be allowed if the receiver is not ready and does not attempt to return the service, or if the ball breaks during play.

BLEEDING, INJURY AND ILLNESS (Rule 16)

If an injury occurs which involves bleeding, the bleeding must be stopped before the player can continue. A player is allowed a reasonable time to attend to a bleeding wound.

If the bleeding was caused solely by the opponent’s action, the injured player wins the match.

If the bleeding recurs no further delay is allowed, except that the player can concede a game, using the 90 second period between games to attend to the wound and stop the bleeding. If unable to stop it, the player must concede the match.

For an injury not involving bleeding, it must be decided whether the injury was either caused by the opponent or self inflicted or contributed to by both players.

If caused by the opponent, the injured player wins the match if any recovery time is needed.

If self-inflicted, the injured player is allowed 3 minutes to recover and must then play on, or concede a game using the 90 second rest period between games to recover.

If contributed by both players, the injured player is allowed an hour to recover.

A player who is ill must play on or can take a rest period by conceding a game and using the 90 second interval to recover. Cramps, feeling sick and breathlessness (including asthma) are considered illnesses. If a player vomits on court, the opponent wins the match.

CONDUCT ON COURT (Rule 17)

Offensive, disruptive or intimidating behaviour in squash is not acceptable.

Included in this category are: audible and visible obscenities, verbal and physical abuse, dissent, abuse of racket, court or ball, unnecessary physical contact, excessive racket swing, unfair warm-up, time-wasting, late back on court, deliberate or dangerous play or action and coaching (except between games).

Note: The above are only abbreviated rules, meant for quick reference. The Rule No. stated in brackets refers to the exact Rule in full detail. This can be checked out at the WSF website at http://www.worldsquash.org.uk/rulescontents.html

Golf and Rugby 7's make it to the 2016 Olympics on 13 August 09!!!!

A sad day for Squash lovers. But, we must not give up the spirit with which we campaigned for the inclusion of the sport at the London Olympics 2016. The popularity of Squash has really picked up over the last 3-4 years in India. A lot more school kids now know about the game and many also play it. We also see a marked increase in the number of competitive tournaments being played all over our country. There is a growing family of schools in Delhi which have begun to publish Squash as a co-curricular sport in their school brochures.

But....the road to the Olympics still has to be tread by all lovers of this great sport. One day, we must and we will succeed!!

The Olympic Bid Presentation - to the Worldwide Squash Family - post Lausanne,

President Ramachandran has asked me to write this message as quickly as possible as a supplement to the press releases.

We were all delighted with the way our presentation went on Monday. We spent Friday, Saturday and Sunday rehearsing the presentations, reviewing, changing here and there, getting the timings right and also going over potential questions which we thought might be asked.

Scott Garrett, our Bid Manager, worked tirelessly to bond and direct the group and get the presentations up to top standard. Come Monday afternoon off we went to find that things were running a bit early, so there was no waiting around, it was into the deeply impressive IOC Conference Room and on with the presentation.

For those of us sitting downstairs waiting time passed very slowly. Then we heard applause - amazing - and next our party came round the corner with our Patron, HRH Tunku Imran, wreathed in smiles. All the panel were exhausted with the tension: Thierry Lincou summed it up "that was pressure of a degree I've never encountered in any match I've played".

The presentation was introductions, then our brand new DVD, then two minutes each from the panel members with accompanying photographs on the four-sided central screen, then questions, total 30 minutes.

We had one absolute starlet on our team, 13 year old Hanna Fekede, tiny in stature but with a mixture of poise and utter charm ('so cute' from the other girls when they met and then automatically mothered her, Hanna's parents not having been able to come, though she was wonderfully looked after by coach Renata Paiva). In a wonderful presentation, which struck an emotional chord with every listener, Hanna stood up and spoke totally from memory. Read her story, please where?. When she finished there was spontaneous applause from the IOC Executive Board!

The summary followed, then amazingly no questions bar one from the President asking World no 1 Nicol David “how a boyfriend might be fitted into her incredibly busy schedule”, a question fielded with total aplomb - ask her! President Rogge then said 'an excellent presentation' and there was further applause. We had a long period of press interviews after that, with Rami, Nicol and of course Hanna in much sought out!

You can see our state of art DVD, which in HD really does prove that the ball can be seen and that squash is TV friendly, and the presentation speeches on our web site - do take a look.

Four months ago we were lagging behind; there is no doubt about it. But since January we have worked tirelessly and made gigantic strides. Our Patron, who is of course an IOC Member, was absolutely delighted with the massive improvement in our presentation and the way we had answered most of the questions posed after the November 2008 presentation. Everyone involved really managed this weekend to give it the very best shot possible and the whole squash family can be deeply proud of that panel of presenters: HRH Tunku Imran, President Ramachandran, Nicol David, Thierry Lincou, Siyole Lusasemi (a first year professional from South Africa) and Hanna Fekede. Scott Garrett was the IT man and Team Director and has given our bid massive commitment since invited to become Bid Manager in mid January. Our PR/Media company, Juniper, has also been doing splendid work especially for the publications which IOC members read.

We must not forget the many years of preparatory work which went into all of this. Tunku Imran, Susie Simcock, Jahangir Khan all worked so hard during their terms of office as President and thereafter to develop the contacts and get us the opportunity to become serious contenders for a place in the Olympic Games. Working on this with all of them of course was our utterly dedicated CEO for these many years, Ted Wallbutton, whose contribution was immense. We have been much helped this past year in particular by Ramona von Ondarza, whose quite amazing knowledge of things Olympic and the IOC people has been invaluable to us.

We have Jahangir now featured in the Olympic museum in the Sporting Heroes section - if in Lausanne do visit this.

Many, many others have also helped and supported this bid. Our partners PSA and WISPA are totally committed. Year in, year out our own media Director, Howard Harding, has also kept us in the Olympic eye. We are also deeply appreciative of the literally hundreds of messages wishing us good luck, which we received between us this weekend, from National Federations and individuals - thank you all so much. Many contributions to our fund have been made and we hope that there will be many more yet as we still face a very significant shortage - please do continue to publicise this need and help us.

We have done all that we can do up to this stage. We must now keep ourselves in front of the IOC Executive Board during the weeks to come and we shall do so. They have an incredibly difficult task ahead in choosing two out of seven excellent contending sports. We just hope and believe that the reasons which we gave them, as in our view compelling in favour of squash, will see us as one of these two sports, turning our long-held dream into a reality and seeing our squash family become part of the much greater Olympic family.

Grudge Cup 09 celebrated with great fanfare and spirit on the occasion of World Squash Day - 23 May 09!!

The organisers had minimum time to get this event organised. Against all expectations we had 74 players participating though a max of 50 had been planned. Such was the excitement!! Online registrations.....the first of its kind for a tournament in North India...proved very popular. 30 odd entries came through this route.

Squash 2016 t-shirts proved extremely popular. About 100 had been printed...these were distributed to all participants, admin staff, DDA officials and coaches. Fitness First delivered 70 bags with Bag, t shirts and a water bottle each along with a one day free pass for the gym. Some snaps above showcase the synergies, the energy and the spirit that were on display.

We sincerely hope such events showcase the popularity of squash and strengthen its bid for inclusion as an Olympic sport in 2016.

Exercising in Summers - tips for players

The summer is a great season for getting in shape, whether by playing a sport, an aerobic exercise routine, or just returning to that familiar running path -- this is the time for activity.

The coach has a responsibility for the present and future of the children entrusted to him/her beyond the purely athletic task. That is to make certain that the child does not get injured or fall ill.

Play It Safe in the Heat

  • Schedule regular fluid breaks during practice and games. Kids need to drink preferably water, every 20 minutes, and more after playing.
  • Prehydrate (drink water before you workout and start loosing it.)
  • Have your child wear light-colored, “breathable” clothing.
  • Use misting sprays on the body to keep cool.
  • Know the signs of heat-related problems, including confusion; dilated pupils; dizziness; fainting; headache; heavy perspiration; nausea; pale and moist or hot, dry skin; weak pulse; and weakness. If your child experiences any combination of these symptoms or doesn't seem quite right, seek medical attention immediately.

Warming up before physical exertion will help people get the most out of their physical activity without muscle strains. In fact, people frequently perform better in their sport when they start with dynamic warm up exercises. Starting with static stretches when you are not warmed up can actually do more harm than good.

Cooling down with light jogging followed by static stretching will make sure that you can perform the next day as it helps in recovery of the muscles.

Try to maintain an even body temperature. After your workout you should not take an extremely hot or cold shower, or a sauna bath, as these can increase the workload on your heart.

If you have to exercise outdoors, take advantage of the coolest times of day -- the early morning and evening hours.

Wearing sunscreen will decrease your body's ability to cool itself off.

Taking time to exercise is taking time for your self. Enjoy it -- smile, breathe deeply and clear your mind.
