Joshna wins second WISPA title on the trot

Chennai: Winning is becoming a habit with Joshna Chinappa. The Indian No. 1 proved yet again that she's in peak form with a second consecutive WISPA title at the NSC Super Satellite No. 4 squash tournament in Malaysia on Friday.

Joshna overcame Malaysian third seed Low Wee Wern 11-8, 11-7, 11-6 in the final at the National Squash Centre in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur, to repeat her performance of the previous week, when she had created history by becoming the first Indian to win a WISPA title.

"I've had two wonderful weeks here,'' an elated Joshna told TOI. "It was all work but I'm happy that I was able to maintain my intensity during both the tournaments thanks to my improved fitness levels.''

The top seeded Indian, given her current form, was favourite going into the final. But Wern, perhaps spurred on by the partisan local crowd, started stronger racing into a 6-1 lead in the opening game.

"I started slowly today. She (Wern) raced to a five point lead and was ahead of me for about 10 minutes of the match,'' said Joshna. "But I caught up and managed to win the game.''

The national champion perhaps just "managed'' to win the first game, but in the next two the story was different. Joshna took the attack to her opponent and won with ease. "I was more consistent than Wern today and that made the difference,'' said the 22-yearold Chennai girl.

"Consistency'' made the difference for Joshna in the title clash on Friday, but what has brought about the change in her game over the last six months? "Definitely my stint at the Pontefract Academy with coach Malcolm Willstrop helped. My fitness has improved and so have my on court poise and skills,'' said Joshna, also giving credit to coaches Cyrus Poncha and Major Maniam.

A rise in rankings is definite when the next WISPA list is released. But, as usual, she's not concerned. "I am more concerned about performing on court on a given day,'' she said.

Joshna claims her first WISPA title

India's squash queen Joshna Chinappa who won her first WISPA title of her career when she won the NSC Satellite No 3 event at National Squash Centre in Kuala Lumpur .  The first ever by an Indian. 

In the final Joshna beat Low Lee Wern 11-8,11-5, 11-3. Joshna had reached two finals this year, losing Satellite events in Viet Nam and Guangdhou. In the semi-finals, Joshna beat top seed Malaysian Sharon Wee, who is ranked No 3 in Asia behind world champ Nicol David and Rebecaa Chiu. Wee had won the bronze at the Doha Asiad.  

Joshna said she was grateful for the sparring she did with Saurav Ghoshal and Harinder Singh at the ICL Academy in Chennai. Unlike other Indian aspirants she doesn't believe in training in Egypt . Joshna has been sponsored by the Mittal Champions Trust. 

A proud father, Anjan, said from Chennai:``Joshna has been extremely sharp and focused, and was in devasting form in the final.  She had made it to finals before but couldn't close it out, which is some thing she has worked on.  This win should help her significantly move up the rankings".

DELHI DOES IT AGAIN IN INTER-STATE SQUASH 

Following their sizzling performance in the individual events, the Delhi Juniors delivered  above expectations at the Junior Inter State Squash Championsh when the Boys Under15 Team consisting of Kush Kumar, Deepak Mishra, Aditya Advani and Sajid Hussain upset top seeded Maharashtra to lift the trophy. The Boys Under 19 team consisting of Gunraj Singh, Shakir Hussain , Varun Prakash and Ashaya Jain 

The girls team consisting of  Sachika Ingale, Pankhuri Malhotra, Vishrutyi Sahni and Adya Advani stood Runner Up in both the Under-19 and Under-15 events behind top seeded Tamilnadu. The most amazing fact of this team is that it consists of two 14 year olds and two 11 year olds who are competing with the top girls in India and holding their own. Pankhuri Mlhotra and Adya Advani are the current Under13 and Under 11 National Champions . The Boys Under 19 team consisting of Gunraj Singh, Shakir Hussain,Varun Prakash and Ashaya Jain was not far behind, reaching the semi-finals and  standing 4^th.

The Delhi Juniors have been consistently performing at the national and international level in the last 2 years and the game has taken off in the Capital City. It bodes well for the Capital which is going to be hosting the Commonwealth Games in 2010 and one could very well see some of these on the courts during the games.

ADYA, PANKHURI, KUSH MAKE HISTORY AT CHENNAI 

The Delhi girls Adya Advani and Pankhuri Malhotra did Delhi proud by claiming the Under 11    and Under 13 National titles respectively. Kush Kumar won the Boys Under 13 title second time in a row. Delhi for the first time produced three National Champions at the Sub Junior/Junior Nationals Squash Championship at Chennai with Tamil Nadu taking lead with five titles and with Maharashtra settling for two. These achievements of Delhi juniors signals a strong resurgence of Delhi Squash at the National and International level in recent times. 

Pankhuri Malhotra, last years Under 11 National Champion, clinched U 13 title this year defeating Tamil Nadu's Lakshya Ragvendera. Adya Advani, last years runner up in U 11 category emerged as undisputed winner this time defeating Aishwarya Bhattacharya of Maharashtra. Kush Kumar retained his boys under 13 crown defeating Raghav Mehrotra of Maharashtra. Sachika Ingale from Delhi, quarter finalist in U 15 group, was adjudged the most promising player among girls.

Experience at the Junior Nationals 08

Hi all!

The Delhi state teams of young boys and girls have just returned from Chennai. The championship was held alongside the PSA challenger from 31^st October to 8^thNovember. 

A huge entry of 400 children from the country turned the ICL courts into a highly energized place. The enthusiasm they generated was seen as they played their games with zest and camaraderie. An interaction which has and will go a long way in blending and bonding for life. 

It’s been such an eye opener in many ways, and we all are motivated to support many more such events in any way we can. Let me tell you the work has already begun. With ideas of more tournaments in Delhi, exchange programmes and arranging housing accommodations for girls traveling from the south or anywhere out of Delhi. 

As the event came to an end with the battles of wins and losses the interaction led to the crowning of the titles. Here the name of Kush Kumar of Delhi deserves special mention. Our little master undisputedly bagged the U-15 state title having played some scintillating squash, beating the country’s best. Absolutely breathe taking from someone so young. A lesson for all of us- he has proved what dedication and hard work can do. 

Our young girls from Delhi too came out with flying colours. The girls from south who were so exemplary in their behavior swept us off our feet with their simplicity.

They were given a tough fight by our “girl power”.

Leading the pack were Pankhuri and Aadya who showed us that success just follows if you put in your best.

DELHI RESULTS AT THE SUB JUNIOR/JUNIOR NATIONAL SQUASH CHAMPIONSHIP 2008 

This year nationals has added another feather in the cap of our players.Carrying on  from last year’s superb exhibition at the Nationals, they increase their tally of quarter finalists and above from eight to nine despite two children moving out from Delhi to Mumbai during last year. 

Delhi for the first time got 3 National Champions in the junior categories followed by 2 Fourth positions, 3 Fifth positions, 1 sixth positions and Sachika Ingale was declared the Most Promising Girl Player of the Tournament. Robin Mann too deserves special mention as the unseeded player to have reached to top four.

Jr Nationals 08.....Final Results

All matches go according to seedings on the penultimate day at the junior national championships in Chennai, with Tamil Nadu winning 5 titles followed by 3 titles for Delhi and 2 for Maharashtra.

Vikram Malhotra and Dipika Pallikal brushed off resistance from Aditya Jagtap and Surbhi Misra to confirm their supremacy in the under 19 boys and girls category. Vikram who turns 19 in a week looked solid winning his last junior event while Dipika regained her national title convincingly. 

Karan Malik won his first major title and Harita Omprakash won her 5 consecutive national title in the under 17 category.

Jr Nationals 08 - QF Results (Day 3)

Update 2 from Cyrus:

There were a handful of upsets in the younger age groups at the junior national squash championships here in Chennai on quarterfinal day. 9 out of a total of 40 match played today saw the 'underdog' goining through.

In the boys under 11 category, A. Rishdev seeded 5/8 from Chennai defeated 3/4 ranked Yohann Surti in 4 close games. Rishidev played some delightful drives and drops keeping Yohann always on the run winning in straight games. Robin Mann from Delhi who ousted second seed Sandeep Paswan from Maharasthra yesterday won once again in four games against Velavan from Chennai.

In boys under 13, 3/4 seeded Yohan Pandole was unable to keep up the speed and retreviving power of Sandeep Ramachandran continuing his winning streek while Abhimanyu Shah from Maharastra defeated state mate and higher ranked Aditya Khatri in straight games.

In the boys under 15, Vrishabh Kotian came up with the match of his life as he fought back from 2 games down against higher ranked Karan Thahryamal from Rajashtan. Vrishab lost the first easily but in the second games both players were levelled at 10-10 with Karan edging him out 13-11. A huge comback in the third and fought gave Vrishabh the confidence against a tyring Karan. In the end, Vrishab had 4 matchballs and converted it after 2 points. A great result from Vrishab having shifted from Mumbai to Chennai 6months ago.  Delhi based Deepak Mishra outplayed Mumbai's Caran Arora in the quartefianl in staright games.

The girls under 11 saw both Tamilnadu girls, Shamika Reddy & Neharika Balamurukan seeded 3/4 going down to Rayna Kishanchandani and Jui Kalgutar respectively. And Tanvi Jain defeated Rinki Soni in the girls under 17 category.

An exciting day overall with nearly 25% upsets.

Cyrus Poncha, National Coach, presents the following update:

Sandeep Ramachandran from ICL Academy a 7th standard student at Lady Andal School clawed his way back from 2 games down against a taller Suyash Sharma from Rajasthan on day 2 in the pre quarterfinal stage of the Boys under 13 in the National Junior Championships being held at the ICL Squash Academy in Chennai. Losing the first two games 7-11, 9-11 Sandeep pulled it back comfortably winning the next 2 games 11-5, 11-6. The decider was a cliffhanger, Suyash with a series of winners raced from 6-6 to 10-6 match ball. With the match looking over, Sandeep showed his grit picking up every ball and played the remaining points to perfection. Both players were charged up and Sandeep won the final game which went to the tie breaker 14-12. the final match score was 7-11, 9-11, 11-5, 11-6, 14-12. Sandeep had shifted to Chennai from Dubai less than year ago to pursue squash.

 

Another exciting match against 2 Mumbai lads where Samir Mistry went down to Pranav Merchant after leading 2-0.

All top seeds were win action today all sailing thru without any major problems.
