The Olympic Bid Presentation - to the Worldwide Squash Family - post Lausanne,

President Ramachandran has asked me to write this message as quickly as possible as a supplement to the press releases.

We were all delighted with the way our presentation went on Monday. We spent Friday, Saturday and Sunday rehearsing the presentations, reviewing, changing here and there, getting the timings right and also going over potential questions which we thought might be asked.

Scott Garrett, our Bid Manager, worked tirelessly to bond and direct the group and get the presentations up to top standard. Come Monday afternoon off we went to find that things were running a bit early, so there was no waiting around, it was into the deeply impressive IOC Conference Room and on with the presentation.

For those of us sitting downstairs waiting time passed very slowly. Then we heard applause - amazing - and next our party came round the corner with our Patron, HRH Tunku Imran, wreathed in smiles. All the panel were exhausted with the tension: Thierry Lincou summed it up "that was pressure of a degree I've never encountered in any match I've played".

The presentation was introductions, then our brand new DVD, then two minutes each from the panel members with accompanying photographs on the four-sided central screen, then questions, total 30 minutes.

We had one absolute starlet on our team, 13 year old Hanna Fekede, tiny in stature but with a mixture of poise and utter charm ('so cute' from the other girls when they met and then automatically mothered her, Hanna's parents not having been able to come, though she was wonderfully looked after by coach Renata Paiva). In a wonderful presentation, which struck an emotional chord with every listener, Hanna stood up and spoke totally from memory. Read her story, please where?. When she finished there was spontaneous applause from the IOC Executive Board!

The summary followed, then amazingly no questions bar one from the President asking World no 1 Nicol David “how a boyfriend might be fitted into her incredibly busy schedule”, a question fielded with total aplomb - ask her! President Rogge then said 'an excellent presentation' and there was further applause. We had a long period of press interviews after that, with Rami, Nicol and of course Hanna in much sought out!

You can see our state of art DVD, which in HD really does prove that the ball can be seen and that squash is TV friendly, and the presentation speeches on our web site - do take a look.

Four months ago we were lagging behind; there is no doubt about it. But since January we have worked tirelessly and made gigantic strides. Our Patron, who is of course an IOC Member, was absolutely delighted with the massive improvement in our presentation and the way we had answered most of the questions posed after the November 2008 presentation. Everyone involved really managed this weekend to give it the very best shot possible and the whole squash family can be deeply proud of that panel of presenters: HRH Tunku Imran, President Ramachandran, Nicol David, Thierry Lincou, Siyole Lusasemi (a first year professional from South Africa) and Hanna Fekede. Scott Garrett was the IT man and Team Director and has given our bid massive commitment since invited to become Bid Manager in mid January. Our PR/Media company, Juniper, has also been doing splendid work especially for the publications which IOC members read.

We must not forget the many years of preparatory work which went into all of this. Tunku Imran, Susie Simcock, Jahangir Khan all worked so hard during their terms of office as President and thereafter to develop the contacts and get us the opportunity to become serious contenders for a place in the Olympic Games. Working on this with all of them of course was our utterly dedicated CEO for these many years, Ted Wallbutton, whose contribution was immense. We have been much helped this past year in particular by Ramona von Ondarza, whose quite amazing knowledge of things Olympic and the IOC people has been invaluable to us.

We have Jahangir now featured in the Olympic museum in the Sporting Heroes section - if in Lausanne do visit this.

Many, many others have also helped and supported this bid. Our partners PSA and WISPA are totally committed. Year in, year out our own media Director, Howard Harding, has also kept us in the Olympic eye. We are also deeply appreciative of the literally hundreds of messages wishing us good luck, which we received between us this weekend, from National Federations and individuals - thank you all so much. Many contributions to our fund have been made and we hope that there will be many more yet as we still face a very significant shortage - please do continue to publicise this need and help us.

We have done all that we can do up to this stage. We must now keep ourselves in front of the IOC Executive Board during the weeks to come and we shall do so. They have an incredibly difficult task ahead in choosing two out of seven excellent contending sports. We just hope and believe that the reasons which we gave them, as in our view compelling in favour of squash, will see us as one of these two sports, turning our long-held dream into a reality and seeing our squash family become part of the much greater Olympic family.

Grudge Cup 09 celebrated with great fanfare and spirit on the occasion of World Squash Day - 23 May 09!!

The organisers had minimum time to get this event organised. Against all expectations we had 74 players participating though a max of 50 had been planned. Such was the excitement!! Online registrations.....the first of its kind for a tournament in North India...proved very popular. 30 odd entries came through this route.

Squash 2016 t-shirts proved extremely popular. About 100 had been printed...these were distributed to all participants, admin staff, DDA officials and coaches. Fitness First delivered 70 bags with Bag, t shirts and a water bottle each along with a one day free pass for the gym. Some snaps above showcase the synergies, the energy and the spirit that were on display.

We sincerely hope such events showcase the popularity of squash and strengthen its bid for inclusion as an Olympic sport in 2016.

Exercising in Summers - tips for players

The summer is a great season for getting in shape, whether by playing a sport, an aerobic exercise routine, or just returning to that familiar running path -- this is the time for activity.

The coach has a responsibility for the present and future of the children entrusted to him/her beyond the purely athletic task. That is to make certain that the child does not get injured or fall ill.

Play It Safe in the Heat

  • Schedule regular fluid breaks during practice and games. Kids need to drink preferably water, every 20 minutes, and more after playing.
  • Prehydrate (drink water before you workout and start loosing it.)
  • Have your child wear light-colored, “breathable” clothing.
  • Use misting sprays on the body to keep cool.
  • Know the signs of heat-related problems, including confusion; dilated pupils; dizziness; fainting; headache; heavy perspiration; nausea; pale and moist or hot, dry skin; weak pulse; and weakness. If your child experiences any combination of these symptoms or doesn't seem quite right, seek medical attention immediately.

Warming up before physical exertion will help people get the most out of their physical activity without muscle strains. In fact, people frequently perform better in their sport when they start with dynamic warm up exercises. Starting with static stretches when you are not warmed up can actually do more harm than good.

Cooling down with light jogging followed by static stretching will make sure that you can perform the next day as it helps in recovery of the muscles.

Try to maintain an even body temperature. After your workout you should not take an extremely hot or cold shower, or a sauna bath, as these can increase the workload on your heart.

If you have to exercise outdoors, take advantage of the coolest times of day -- the early morning and evening hours.

Wearing sunscreen will decrease your body's ability to cool itself off.

Taking time to exercise is taking time for your self. Enjoy it -- smile, breathe deeply and clear your mind.

The rules and duration of games should be changed to the age of the participants while the training sessions should be relatively short and well-planned.

Adult supervision is the most important safety factor in training.

Children will gain strength, but muscle size will not increase until after puberty.

A good program emphasizes proper form and technique rather than competition.

UP State Ranking Tournament 09 held at the legendary Mayo Hall Sports Squash Complex, Allahabad

Its a little over 5am....Prayagraj Express train on way to Delhi from Allahabad. I cannot sleep further as the excitement is palpable. Its been 3 heady, nostalgic days at Allahabad. I was re-visiting my College time city after 18 long years....and that too for Squash!! The legendary Amitabh Bhachchan Mayo Sports Complex was hosting the UP State Ranking Squash Tournament 09. This Complex has produced great sportsmen for the country....Abhinn Shyam Gupta, former India No.1 badminton champion being one of them. The Squash Courts here, built during my college days after a lot of us students won over the Directorate of Sports, UP Government, have been the Mecca of Squash coaches for our country for sometime now. Dilip Tripathy, an ASF Level 2 Coach, one of the highest level trainers in India along with Hari Om Tripathy, currently coaching at the premiere ICL Squash Academy, Chennai are both products of the Mayo Squash Courts. Dilip had also trained the current Indian National Men's Squash Champion Sourav Ghoshal while he was a junior. Sourav is also an Arjuna awardee.

So, in many ways the Mayo Courts have been critical to the growth of Indian Squash. And now they were hosting this ranking tournament, in association with Directorate of Sports, UP Government, UPSRA & SRFI after many many years.

The Organizers....the Allahabad Squash Rackets Association did a fantastic job. There were about 60 odd entries for various boys/mens categories:

  1. Over 35
  2. Under 15
  3. Under 17
  4. Under 19, and
  5. Men's Open
The event was well managed and executed by the Allahabad Squash Rackets Association and time schedules were adhered to by one and all. T-Shirts were sponsored by the Krishna Virendra Trust.

Sandeep Yadav, a local boy, came out as the most valuable player..winning both the Men's Open as well as the Boys Under 19 events.

A Delhi based NGO....REACHA, that works closely with the DDA for Squash Development in Delhi & North India...has decided to provide a years squash kit sponsorship for Sandeep worth Rs. 20,000 as part of its Sports Development Programme. This kit is being couriered to the Allahabad Squash Rackets Association within the next week.

Keen sponsors are being explored to further develop Squash in UP. These sponsorships would be based purely on merit & performance. A number of businesses in Allahabad have already started talking with the local association to sponsor & support players like Sandeep (he was recently sent to Dilip Tripathy for a 15 day coaching stint in Kolkata by the Allahabad Squash Rackets Association).

For a change this event was widely covered by the local media - Times of India, Dainik Jagran, Amar Ujala, Hindustan, Sahara Samay etc. Snaps and media clips will be uploaded here within the next few days.

Squash needs a lot more of such synergies to become a popular sport of the masses!!

Signing off!
